Madonna of the Physician

Summary

She appeared to the doctor Pascariello Macchia in the mid-fifteenth century with the assurance of the sad end of the scourge of the plague of Trani. The Virgin Mary showed her concern and care for the city. The sanctuary built in that place and the coronation of the venerated effigy of the "Madonna of the Doctor" which took place roughly 500 years after the memorable event, gave luster and splendor to the statue of the Virgin and the filial devotion of the people. On June 5th 2005, the 50th anniversary of this solemn coronation, the Cardinal Josè Saraiva Martins encircled the head of Our Lady of the Apparition with brand new delicate golden crown, of exquisite jewels. Glory be to God and to His Mother! The concourse of people in the liturgical celebrations of the month of May at the Sanctuary, the Triduum, preached in the cathedral from our Archbishop Giovanni Battista Pichierri, the sacred rites of coronation and of the solemn procession of June 5 gave a measure of sensitivity and gratitude of all to an increasingly generous and increasingly invoked Mother.

The Spiritual Father Can. John Masciullo
