Summary
In the year 958, a beggar who passed in front of a convent, suddenly he heard himself called by name, turned and saw, to his great excitement, the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Mother of God reassured him with the sign of the cross, then after blessing him, gave him the task of going to the convent with a message of repentance and conversion. Our Lady also sent him to say that evidence of this appearance would be a white dove on the wooden cross erected by the beggar in front of the convent. The abbess and the nuns were convinced of the authenticity of the message when they saw the white dove perched on the cross. A alrge temple was later erected on the site, consecrated in 1011 by the Bishop of Paderborn and dedicated to Our Lady of the Cross. Herford became a popular place of pilgrimage.
