Summary
Formerly outside the city walls of Genoa, the majestic "Santuario delle Santa Maria delle Vigne" takes its name from vineyards in the midst of which was first erected a chapel to the Virgin, with her appearance to a certain Lady Argenta in the sixth century. The seer, built a small chapel, the first step towards the current sanctuary.
Only in the second half of the century began the construction of the Collegiata-Santuario which, with different modifications and extensions that followed, was completed in the early years of the 17th century. The primitive picture of the Virgin 'Vine' was unearthed and restored in 1603 and the mystical effigy was crowned in 1616.
Remarkable that - in the coinage of Genoa, "City of Mary" - would be used in the seventeenth century play quest'effigie of the Virgin with the words: "Sub tuum Praesidium" and "eos et rege", and to keep in mind that the ' honor of the Doge and the dignitaries of the Republic of Genoa at the "Lady of the Vineyards" on the occasion of her birthday (November 21) lasted for many decades, just to mark the queen ship of the Virgin.
The Sanctuary
Along the old via Marenco is the shrine of Our Lady of the Vineyards, which dates from the late sixteenth century. Recently renovated, its facade is decorated with a small porch and inside large eighteenth-century stucco by FM Marvaldi and frescos by Francesco Carrega .
