On July 2, 1518, in an old chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Woods, a young girl, Angela Schiaffino, said that she saw the Virgin who asked her to build a shrine. On July 2, 1631 the church was completed. By decree of August 12, 1817, Pius VII (1800-1823) authorized the Coronation of Our Lady of the Woods. The ceremony was celebrated on the first Sunday in September of 1818.
